City making last push to find Sustainable Community Builders
Do you know an individual, group, club, agency or society who has made Cranbrook a better, stronger community? If so, the City of Cranbrook would like to hear from you.
The city is partnering with Cranbrook Connected, the city’s sustainability committee, and the Cranbrook and District Community Foundation to recognize those who have made an outstanding contribution to the social, arts/cultural, economic or environmental sustainability of Cranbrook.
According to Mayor Wayne Stetski, the Sustainable Community Builder Award is a way to celebrate a legacy of work or a more recent achievement that might otherwise go unrecognized.
“This is our highest municipal honour to recognize an individual, group or organization who has, through outstanding volunteerism or exemplary action, demonstrated sincere commitment to making our City a more sustainable community today and for the future.”
The members of Cranbrook Connected are managing the Award application process for selection of the winning candidate. The Cranbrook and District Community Foundation is partnering with the city to provide $500 to the Award winner to donate to the charity of their choice.
According to Chris Ayling, Chair of Cranbrook Connected, the Sustainable Community Builder Award’s impact also goes beyond the recognition of an achievement.
“The concept of ‘sustainability’ can seem abstract to some people, so the award puts a name and a face to a specific action or actions in our community,” said Ayling. “The award winner becomes a role model for all of us and hopefully encourages others to volunteer, to work with like-minded people, to join a group or organization to build a better and stronger community.”
Past Award winners include Debbie Sinclair of Big Brothers, Big Sisters in 2009 and the Cranbrook Farmer’s Market Society in 2010. Application forms and eligibility criteria are available at City Hall, on the City’s website www.cranbrook.ca or at www.cranbrookconnected.ca.
The deadline for nominations is Monday, April 15.
